- Jim was born in Henderson County TN in 1849 shortly before his family moved to LaFayette and Marshal Counties in MS. where his father was a well off cotton farmer who owned nine slaves.
When he was just past his teens, he rode to Bell County Texas on horse back where he established a farm raising cotton as well as some livestock. Like many others, he felt that war torn MS offered no future and sparsely populated Texas which had not been as severely impacted by the American Civil War was envisioned as the new promised land.
He met and married Elizabeth Jane Pass in Bell County. She was the daughter of a very prosperous farmer and his wife whose ancestry dated back to King James IV of Scotland as well as other royal and noble families. One of his daughters intimated to this author that at times he felt as though his inlaws were looking down on him and he felt pressured to to obtain prosperity as well.
He and Lizzie, his wife, had three children in Bell County before moving to Jones County Texas where five more children were born. They moved to Knox County Texas in about 1905.
Jim was industrious and a good provider. However, he had a severe alcohol problem most of his adult life. He lived in dry counties, but was always able to obtain liquor. His wife eventually separated from him after the children were grown, but they were never legally divorced. His daughter, Maud, told this author in 1981 that she just wasn't able to deal with his drunken bouts any longer.
His drinking continued into his retirement years. During this time he often took the train back to MS. to visit his brothers and their families. According to one of his daughters, he told people in Texas that he never drank when he was in MS. But a cousin in MS told this author in 1981 that he told the family in MS that he only drank in MS and never drank in Texas.
Jim died in 1933 of a respiratory infection. The depression had put his widow in severe economic straights, and she had to sell the land Jim left. Shortly after that rich oil deposits were found on the this land.
