      Mrs. Bess (Tate) James, age 83, of Newport, died Sunday, April 12, 2009 at Little Rock. She was born July 9, 1925 in Arlington, Texas, the daughter of Jake H. Tate and Bessie (Price) Tate.
      Mrs. James was a graduate of Arlington High School, and had attended University of Texas at Austin, Texas. She was a teacher in the Newport Special School District many years, and an active member of the Newport Service League. Mrs. James was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport, where she was a member of the Sally Jean Circle. She was also past president of the Batesville District United Methodist Women, and a member of Newport United Methodist Women, holding every office at one time or another. Mrs. James enjoyed working in her yard, was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed time spent participating in church activities.
      She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Howard “Bob” James on July 10, 2005; her parents; an infant son; and one sister, Lucille Cramm.
      Mrs. James is survived by two daughters, Barbara “Barbie” Tate James of Forrest City, and Joanne James Ballance and husband, Chuck, of Florence, Miss.; three nephews; and one niece.
      Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Newport First United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Beebe Cemetery, Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 4 p.m. Visitation was Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 5-8 p.m.
      Pallbearers were Larry Delaney, Pete Long, Mark McGaughey, Penn Stafford, Jim McLarty, and Mike Brand. Honorary Pallbearers were Marvin Thaxton, Jack Owen, Bill Keedy, Dr. John Wright, Dr. Guilford Dudley, Gay Lacy III, and Frank Plegge.
      Memorials may be made to the Bob James Memorial Preaching Series, c/o First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 489, Newport, AR 72112.
